A disaster the world can avoid

To UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon:

As citizens concerned about the victims of conflicts and natural disasters, we applaud your call to find the person with the best experience and skills to run the UN’s Humanitarian Affairs. We call on you to withstand pressure from powerful governments and ensure this and other UN appointments are made on the basis of merit, not nationality or patronage.

A disaster the world can avoid
My name is Nour al Homsi and I'm a 28 year-old Syrian refugee in Lebanon. I live in a tent in Zahle. One Sunday in December, I had to carry my one-month-old son Ahmed through snow for 45 minutes to reach medical care. But by the time I arrived at the clinic it was too late: he had frozen to death.

I have been a refugee for two and half years now. I been given four blankets, three plastic sheets to prevent water leaking into my tent and 10 litres of fuel. I also get $19 a month from the World Food Programme and pay rent for my tent, like most refugees in the Bekaa Valley.

I hear the UN is hiring a new leader to support people like me but will the best person get the job? I really hope the UN looks around the world for the right person who can bring us help and prevent further misery for the tens of thousands of children living in tents. Please sign my petition now.
