In Ethiopia, armed groups are using Facebook to incite violence against ethnic Tigrayans, calling them “hyenas” and “a cancer.” This shocking news comes just three years after Facebook admitted its own complicity in inciting a genocide in Myanmar, and yet top executives still aren’t taking the threat of violence seriously.
Thanks to great reporting by The Wall Street Journal, we know it’s even worse than we thought -- for years, Facebook executives have consistently ignored internal alarms about violence, hate, and misinformation on their platforms. Not to mention hiding their own research about how Instagram can exacerbate body image issues for teenage girls.
Enough is enough -- it’s up to us to act and hold Facebook accountable. We deserve to know the truth of why Facebook covered up its own internal research, and to understand the full extent of the harms it’s causing.
