Stand with the Yanomami mothers

To world leaders, and the Brazilian government:

We urge you to stand with the Yanomami people of the Amazon and do all you can to put an end to all mining activity in their sacred lands, including stopping the violent attacks against these vulnerable communities. We also urge the Brazilian government and Congress to drop all attempts to open up Indigenous lands to mining and other dangerous exploitative activities. Indigenous territories across the Amazon are crucial to preserving the forest, and should therefore be protected against any activities that put both our environment and the health of local populations in danger.

Stand with the Yanomami mothers
My name is Sonia Guajajara, a mother of three, and an Indigenous leader of the Brazilian Amazon -- and I am writing to the Avaaz community today with an urgent request for help!

The day after Mother's Day, dozens of Yanomami women and their children were under heavy gunfire, in what was the first of many attacks by miners surrounding their lands. These brave women ran with their children in their arms, trying to protect them, but two little kids tried to hide in the forest, and unfortunately drowned in the river.

Despite several appeals, the government is doing nothing to remove the miners and is failing to protect the 27,000 Indigenous people who live there. Alone, our voices have not been enough to pressure the government, but if millions of people join this fight, we can get the world behind the call to protect these Yanomami moms, their children, and their lands.

We cannot stand by while these women fear for their children's lives -- let's reach 1 million signatures and demand immediate protective action by Braziian authorities. Sign and share this petition with everyone you know.
