En tant que médecins, infirmières et professionnels de santé du monde entier, notre responsabilité est de tirer la sonnette d'alarme. Notre travail consiste à protéger la santé des personnes. En ce moment, nous sommes confrontés non seulement à une pandémie de COVID-19, mais à une infodémie mondiale: la désinformation virale sur les médias sociaux menace des vies dans le monde entier.
Certaines publications affirment que la cocaïne est un remède. D’autre prétendent que le COVID-19 est une arme biologique développée par la Chine ou les États-Unis, et ces contenus se sont propagés plus rapidement que le virus lui-même. Les plateformes digitales ont bien essayé d'agir en supprimant certaines publications lorsque celles-ci sont signalées. Elles ont également permis à l'Organisation mondiale de la santé de publier des annonces gratuitement.
Mais ces efforts sont loin d'être suffisants.
Le tsunami de contenus faux et trompeurs sur le coronavirus n'est pas un phénomène isolé: il fait partie d’un fléau mondial. Sur Facebook, nous avions déjà vu des allégations selon lesquelles le dioxyde de chlore aiderait les personnes souffrant d'autisme et de cancer; que des millions d'Américains aurait reçu le “virus du cancer” via le vaccin contre la polio; que les troubles du déficit de l’attention auraient été “inventés par les grandes sociétés pharmaceutiques”. Et la liste est longue.
Parce qu’ils contribuent à populariser de faux traitements ou à développer la peur des vaccins et des traitements efficaces, ces mensonges sont loin d’être anodins. Et ils se propagent à grande échelle - un article sur Facebook affirmant que le gingembre est 10 000 fois plus efficace pour vaincre le cancer que la chimiothérapie a été liké, partagé et commenté près de 30 000 fois.
C'est pourquoi nous appelons aujourd'hui les géants de la technologie à prendre des mesures systémiques et immédiates pour endiguer le flux de désinformation sur la santé et la crise de santé publique qu'elle a déclenchée.
Nous travaillons dans les hôpitaux, les cliniques et les services de santé publique du monde entier et ne connaissons que trop bien les effets réels de cette infodémie. C’est nous qui traitons les nourrissons hospitalisés pour la rougeole, une maladie complètement évitable autrefois éliminée dans des pays comme les États-Unis, mais qui se propage maintenant en grande partie à cause de la propagande anti-vaccin.
Nous, professionnels de la santé, faisons non seulement face à de telles conséquences, mais nous sommes souvent blâmés pour cela. La désinformation sape ainsi le moral d'une profession déjà sous tension, tandis que le coût financier pour la contrer pèse sur des budgets très serrés.
Le diagnostic est sombre. Que pouvons-nous faire?
Les plateformes de réseaux sociaux doivent commencer par deux mesures évidentes et urgentes.
Premièrement, ils doivent corriger les intox sur la santé. Cela signifie alerter et avertir chaque personne qui a vu ou interagi avec des informations erronées sur la santé sur ces plateformes et partager un rectificatif bien conçu et vérifié de manière indépendante - ce qui aide à éviter que les utilisateurs accordent crédit à des mensonges nuisibles. Alors que des plateformes comme Facebook ont déjà adopté un label “désinformation” pour les faits qui s’avèrent erronés après vérification, ce système ne va pas assez loin, car des millions de personnes peuvent avoir vu un message avant qu'il ne soit vérifié et donc que le label soit apposé. C'est pourquoi nous appelons instamment Facebook à alerter TOUS les utilisateurs victimes d'un tel contenu, ce qui signifie aller plus loin que l'étiquetage en envoyant aux utilisateurs des corrections rétroactives.
Deuxièmement, les plateformes doivent détoxifier les algorithmes qui définissent ce que les gens voient. Cela signifie déclasser dans les flux utilisateur les mensonges ainsi que les pages et groupes qui les partagent au lieu de les amplifier. La désinformation et les pages et canaux récidivistes qui les diffusent devraient également être supprimés des algorithmes qui recommandent le contenu. Ces algorithmes accordent actuellement la priorité au maintien des utilisateurs en ligne plutôt qu'à la protection de leur santé, ce qui finit par atteindre le bien-être de l'humanité.
Les entreprises technologiques qui ont à la fois facilité et tiré profit de la diffusion de ces idées ont un pouvoir et une responsabilité uniques pour lutter contre la propagation meurtrière de la désinformation et empêcher les réseaux sociaux de rendre nos sociétés plus malades encore. Pour sauver des vies et rétablir la confiance dans les soins médicaux fondés sur la science, les géants de la technologie doivent cesser de laisser prospérer les mensonges, diffamations et autres fantasmes qui nous menacent tous.
