Agricultural biocides in user-friendly packaging are sold in garden centres all over Ireland to private persons. RoundUp is promoted as harmless, but unsuspecting customers have no idea what the risks of this product actually are. Children are especially sensitive to toxic substances and should therefore not be exposed to them.
The World Health Organisation recently declared that RoundUp probably causes cancer. It has been found in breast milk samples and in 75% of air tests around the world. This year thousands of honeybees from Natural Beehives in Gweedore, Donegal were killed after the spraying of RoundUp nearby.
Recently RoundUp was banned in Mexico, Sri Lanka, The Netherlands, France and Russia. It is time for these poisons to be taken off the shelves in Ireland. There are effective alternatives that pose no threat to health. It is time to invest in these non-toxic alternatives.
New laws, coming in November 2015, mean that certification is required for the professional use of pesticides. This means that anyone buying over 5 litres of the product needs a cert or herd number. Anything under 5 litres will still be on the shelves.
We want an outright ban on Glyphosate (the main ingredient in Monsanto's RoundUp) throughout Ireland.
If you feel inspired to sign this petition we thank you and encourage you to take further action by contacting your local Council, Golf Club, Tidy Towns, Coillte and anywhere else you feel they are unaware of the hazards of this chemical.
