British Prime Minister David Cameron: Cancel Sisi's visit to the UK

British Prime Minister David Cameron
We strongly condemn the UK government's invitation to Egyptian military dictator Abdelfattah el-Sisi to visit London. Mr Sisi and his military regime represent the antithesis of fundamental British values of the rule of law, respect for human rights and democracy. His regime has committed what Human Rights Watch called the worst massacres in Egypt's modern history, and turned the judiciary into a tool to settle scores with the civilian opposition, handing mass death sentences against opponents, in what Amnesty International called "charade" trials.
More than 40,000 political prisoners languish in Sisi's jails without due process.
Sisi has persecuted all opponents from across the political spectrum and branded them as terrorists, while failing to confront the genuine threat of ISIS expansion in Sinai.
His closure of the political sphere in Egypt will lead to further radicalisation and bloodshed.
We request the Prime Minister to uphold British values and refuse to entertain an audience with Mr Sisi. Rather than welcoming a brutal dictator, the UK government should engage with the democratic opposition in Egypt to explore alternatives to Sisi's rule.
