Canadian Government: Introduce a Guaranteed Basic Income
A Guaranteed Basic Income will eliminate poverty in our country and provide the security and assurance needed for our economy to thrive. Impoverished and at risk people all across the country will be able to start to support themselves with our help, leading to reduced use of other social spending. Many social programs that target narrow problems within society will become unnecessary, as the root cause will be confronted and dealt with. We can end poverty overnight with stroke of a pen, create a more stable society and economy, and start to address growing income inequality that threatens further tensions in our society.
A Guaranteed Basic Income was tried in Manitoba in the 1970's and it showed promising results. There were reduced hospital visits, better educational outcomes for teens, and decreases in mental health issues.
