Cape Agulhas Municipality:
Agulhas C.
started this petition to
The Southernmost Tip belongs to all of Africa!
This is where the African continent dips her toe into the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, in a small town called L’Agulhas.
Recently the Cape Agulhas Municipality approved a development on top of the Agulhas Mountain. This will change the skyline forever and will change spirit of our town forever, not only for us residents, but to all who live in Africa.
We respect the owner’s right to build on his privately-owned agricultural land which falls within the Cape Agulhas residential area, however we strongly feel that the local residence should have been considered regarding the following:
Why were there(?):
• No Public Participation
• No Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
• No Heritage impact study – impacting on the view from the Southernmost Tip and Cape Agulhas Lighthouse
• Building along the Skyline
• Road Closure with no notification
• Road Closure to the viewing point
• Road Closure to the property with the oldest radar station along the South African Coast line
Considered that:
• The town of L’Agulhas falls within the buffer zone of a National Park
• The town of L’Agulhas falls within the buffer zone of a UNESCO World Heritage site – The Cape Floral Kingdom
• Development on virgin land
• Development on Limestone Fynbos, at least 4 endangered species are found along the ridge that we are aware of, with possible endemic species that only exist within our small region
• Two wetlands area fall within the affected area
• Western Cape has a set of guidelines of building on mountains, hills and ridges, was this taken into account
The towns of Suiderstrand, L’Agulhas, Struisbaai, Arniston and Napier have all started Concerned Citizen Groups in the past due to the irregularities within the decision-making process within the Cape Agulhas Municipality.
We ask you to sign our petition to object to the procedures that are followed within the Cape Agulhas Building and Town Planning sections; to object to the disrespect shown towards the Southernmost Tip community in general by the Local Government and developers. We therefore ask that you sign our petition to demand that the decisions regarding the development be audited.
Africa's southernmost tip belongs to all Africans, lets protect our natural & cultural heritage for future generations.
