DOC DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION, ANIMAL HEALTH BOARD
The use of 1080, a pesticide using sodium fluoroacetate, is a contentious issue in New Zealand, with the majority of the debate occurring between conservationists and hunters.

Although the use of 1080 in New Zealand was deemed "effective and safe" by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment in a 2011 re-evaluation[1] and is widely considered to be the most effective tool currently available for controlling possums over large areas,[2][3] it remains a contentious issue, with the majority of the debate occurring between conservationists and livestock farmers on one side and hunters and animal rights activists on the other.[4] Concerns are also raised about security of potable water supplies in areas where 1080 is applied.[5]

New Zealand is the largest user of biodegradable 1080 poison,[5] using about 80% of the world's supply.[6] Biodegradable 1080 poison is the only toxin currently registered for use on mainland New Zealand as suitable for aerial targeting of the common brushtail possum - a major conservation and agricultural pest.[7] It has been used as such since the late 1950s.[8] Sodium fluoroacetate is imported in a raw form from the United States

1. 1080 (sodium monofluoroacetate) IS A CLASS A TOXIN LETHAL TO ALL THAT BREATHES AIR,
including mammals, birds, bats, insects, lizards, koura, etc. The aerial application of 1080 poison is banned in the U.S. due to
"THE EXTREME HAZARD TO HUMAN HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT." (From the USA Environmental Protection Agency)

2. 1080 IS INHUMANE - ANIMALS AND BIRDS CAN SUFFER FOR HOURS, EVEN DAYS BEFORE DYING. Conveniently hidden in the bush, 1080 is responsible for killing countless creatures.

3. 1080 KEEPS ON KILLING MANY MONTHS AFTER IT IS DROPPED.
Non-target creatures can be poisoned through direct or secondary poisoning, and so it goes on through the food chain.

4. 1080 IS AN INDISCRIMINATE CLASS A POISON WITH NO ANTIDOTE. In more than 50 years of 1080 use in NZ, thousands of family pets and valuable farm stock have suffered the cruel death of 1080 poisoning.

5. 1080 IS A REPRODUCTIVE TOXIN WITH LINKS TO ENDOCRINE DISRUPTION, having the potential to affect breeding and cause abnormalities in the unborn foetus.

6. THE EFFECTS OF CONTINUED 1080 USE ON OUR ENVIRONMENT, OUR ECOSYSTEM, ON ENDANGERED NATIVE SPECIES AND HUMANS IS UNKNOWN. Urgent and immediate research is required.
