Protect Epirus from Oil & Gas Exploitation!
SOS E.
started this petition to
The President of the Hellenic Republic, The Prime Minister of Greece,The Minister of Energy and the Environment, The Members of the Greek Parliament
We urge the President of the Hellenic Republic, the Government and the Greek Parliament to
revoke the granting of rights to explore and exploit hydrocarbons in the Epirus region
(1), to Energean Oil & Gas.
Work has already begun without informed public consent. The industrial extraction of oil and gas, and the inevitable accidents that will follow, will have profound negative impacts on human and animal health for many years. Moreover, Epirus's global reputation for a clean environment will be seriously damaged.
Sign to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of Epirus for the whole world.
Epirus, which includes renowned areas such as Dodona, Zagori and Tzoumerka, is one of the cleanest, least industrialized and most natural areas in Europe. Epirus deserves an environmentally sustainable future, based on its safe renewable energy development, alternative tourism and higher quality agricultural products . Oil and gas exploration, whether by conventional or unconventional methods (such as fracking) will have a devastating effect on Epirus’ extensive livestock farming, beekeeping, wine‐growing and natural resources, such as its famously pure mineral waters. It will undermine irrevocably its numerous protected Natura 2000 sites , including the Kalamas and Acheron river basins. It will also imperil the Northern Pindos National Park , part of which is a designated UNESCO Geopark Vikos ‐ Aoos . The real wealth and future of our land should not be sacrificed for temporary profits or the petroleum lobby.
