The European Commission has signed a Free Trade deal with Brazil and MERCOSUR on June 28, 2019, giving a green light to destruction and exploitation of the Amazon rainforest for the production of cheap meat and animal feed.
This agreement needs European Parliament approval to become law so now is our chance to prevent it!
The leaders of the member states of the EU must place their vote against this catastrophic deal.
WHAT IS MERCOSUR - EU TRADE DEAL AND WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO STOP IT
The EU Commission has already signed this agreement in June 2019, which led Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro celebrate it and increased destruction of the rainforests with the fires we all witnessed this summer. However, the deal is not enforced until European Parliament approves it.
According to IPCC reports, with today's emission rates, CO2 budgets for a 1.5 degrees Celsius warming limit will be entirely gone in less than 8 and a half years. With rainforest destruction, there will be less time left before the carbon budget is gone.
Mercosur means a disaster for climate, nature, animals and the environment.
If the agreement gets its approval, we will witness a total destruction of the Amazon and we must prevent it by requesting EU member states to disapprove it and block the agreement.
PETITION LETTER
Dear leaders of member states of European Union,
We are kindly asking you to block the Free Trade Agreement with Mercosur and vote against at the European Parliament in order to prevent the total destruction of the Amazon rainforest. The agreement has already had a negative impact on the rainforest since the Brazilian government and its president Jair Bolsonaro gave a green light to Amazon deforestation and the fires we witnessed recently.
The Amazon’s destiny is in your power and it depends on your single decision - whether or not to vote for or against its approval at the European Parliament.
Mercosur is an economic and political union comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Free trade deal with the European Union and Mercosur means tax-free import of agricultural goods (cheap meat and soy used for animal feed) from South American countries to the European Union. As breeding cows and growing cheap soy for animal feed contributes to 91% of the Amazon rainforest destruction, this means that the European Union is willing to pay Mercosur to exploit and destroy the biggest rainforest in the world, inflict irreparable damage to the ecosystem and greatly contribute to the climate crisis which will influence every human on the planet.
As an example, the Trade deal with Japan led Japan to leave the International Whale Commission - and continue whale and dolphin exploitation, after three years of pause. We are afraid that Mercosur deal will lead to climate catastrophe.
According to IPCC reports, at today's emissions rates, CO2 budgets for a limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius warming will be entirely gone by less than 8 and half years. With rainforest destruction there would be less time before the carbon budget is depleted.
According to 2019: IPCC Climate change and land: we must change food production: Joseph Poore who led the research states: “A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use.”
This Mercosur deal would also hugely impact on our own European farmers in a very negative way right at the time when these very farmers must surely be on board to work with the government to devise and implement sustainable and ethical agricultural solutions to the Climate Emergency.
This agreement goes against the precautionary principle of the EU - According to the European Commission, the precautionary principle may be invoked when a phenomenon, product or process may have a dangerous effect, identified by a scientific and objective evaluation, if this evaluation does not allow the risk to be determined with sufficient certainty.
Therefore Mercosur - EU trade deal needs to be revoked.
