Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) causes blindness and the death of 2 million children every year in the poorest regions of the world. They do not have access to varied balanced diet that would give them the vital nutrients to stay healthy. Their main or only food is rice.
Golden Rice is a genetically modified rice producing beta-carotene (beta-carotene is converted to Vitamin A in the human body) in high concentration. High enough to prevent VAD in these children. If these children in the world’s poorest regions could eat Golden Rice instead of traditional rice they would be prevented from suffering VAD, from needless blindness and death.
Tell Greenpeace not to oppose one of the necessary solutions to fight against Vitamin A deficiency in the poorest regions.
