Kenyans against the slaughter of dolphins and other cetaceans.

In solidarity with the global anti-dolphin slaughter movement, we, the undersigned conservation organizations and concerned individuals, urge the Japanese government, through the Japanese mission in Kenya, to immediately stop the massive slaughter of dolphins and other cetaceans.
We are aware that as the annual slaughter season commences in Taiji, as many as 20,000 dolphins could be killed in your country. These animals do not belong to the Japanese. These endangered sea creatures are part of the global heritage which, unfortunately, are lured to their deaths by Japanese fishermen who use sound barriers to disorient them out of their normal migration. We are aware that the fishermen later herd them into places that are hidden from public view and later sell most of them to marine parks around the world where they are held in captivity for amusement. We are also aware that those that are not sold are killed off, in what can only be described as massacre, and later sold as food to unsuspecting people.
We would like to remind Japan and the Japanese people that migrating sea creatures are a shared global heritage. Indeed, as Kenyans, we have noticed that owing to global warming, dolphins, whales and other cetaceans have been frequenting our coastline. In this regard, we urge fellow Kenyans, and particularly those living in the coast, not to involve themselves in the slaughtering of dolphins. In the same breath, we ask the Kenya government to protect dolphins more by removing their meat from the list of meats that are allowed to be exported by the Kenya Bureau of Standards. We also call for a review of the Fisheries Bill so that it can return legal protection for these endangered animals as was provided for by the Fisheries Act Cap378.
