Save the Drakensberg Wetlands from the Rerouting of the N3 Highway

The rerouting of the N3 highway will have an immediate negative effect on the towns nearby Van Reenen's Pass - where it currently runs - and pollute the wetlands surrounding De Beer's Pass - the area earmarked for its rerouting. The wetlands are currently home to endangered as well as life-giving plant and animal life.
Redirecting the N3 traffic will result in a minimum loss of 70% of the neighbouring towns' income. In addition to this, highways bring with them pollution, which will have a long term effect the plant and animal life in the area. Not only will wildilfe be affected, but also the people residing in kwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, provinces that are heavily reliant on the water coming from the wetlands. In fact, it generates an income of R150 million per year.
With such social, environmental and economic impacts on the country, what is the benefit of such a project?
