Raif Badawi is a Saudi Arabian dissident, activist and creator of the website blog: Free Saudi Liberals. Raif was arrested in 2012, by the Saudi regime for "insulting Islam through electronic channels", and charged with apostasy. For his "crimes" Raif was sentence to 10 years imprisonment, 1000 lashes and a fine. Lashing, which commenced January 9, 2015, has since been postponed due to Raif's poor health. Raif is known to suffer from hypertension.
According to Raif's wife Ensaf Haidar who, with their three children, were granted political asylum in Canada, reports her husband is undertaking a hunger strike. It is doubtful this will move the hearts of the Saudi regime. However, it is up to us, those with the comparative luxury of living in a free society, to bring attention to this gross injustice, so our luxuries, may become fundamental human rights for others.
