I was in the streets yesterday in solidarity with those held for protesting the new outrageous protest law. Dozens were detained but the worst part was that they took the women, beat them, harassed them and then dumped them in the middle of the desert.

This is just the beginning -- it’s not just the gag law itself but it’s the message we are being sent. That freedom is not our right, that it is acceptable for us to be arrested on a whim and fine for police to beat and abduct young women. It signals the rebirth of the security state where the Ministry of Interior stands tall and fear is king.

The only way to stop this violence is if we all speak out now and remind the government that it was protests that got them into power. The last time Egyptians mobilised with a massive petition, a government was deposed. We have the power to stop this protest killing law. Sign the petition on the right now, then share this with all your friends!

Too much has been sacrificed to surrender the freedom to gather in the streets. I’ve been detained, I’ve been humiliated but it’s nothing compared to those that have lost their family members, those that have sacrificed their eyes for the sake of freedom. It’s our duty to honour their sacrifices.
