English:

Petition concerning the presence of the Rector Magnificus of Utrecht University at the welcoming to town of Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet in Utrecht, on Sunday 16th November 2014

Dear Rector Magnificus of Utrecht University,

In line with the mission statement of Utrecht University, according to which one of the University’s core missions is to “address social issues and solving them”, we suggest to address the following social issue publicly and explicitly.

We, the signers of this petition, acknowledge the implicit discriminatory dimensions of the Dutch tradition ‘Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet’, which is experienced as profoundly offensive by many people, including members of Utrecht University.

Strongly putting forward the decision of the administrative court in July 2014 that ruled the Zwarte Piet character a discriminatory stereotype, we denounce the racist tones that have characterized large parts of the public discussion in the last years.

In view of this, we ask you, as the highest representative of our University, not to participate in an implicit reaffirmation of these racist dimensions by uncritically welcoming Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet on 16th November 2014. We ask you to publicly point out instead, in your function as Rector Magnificus of Utrecht University, that our University acknowledges and disapproves of the messages of exclusion and discrimination that the figure of Zwarte Piet entails and that have been surfacing with striking evidence in the Dutch public sphere.
