After more than two years, the Beamish lake dam has finally been repaired and the water level is being restored. The proposed housing project has been reduced in size so that the integrity of the wildlife corridor is preserved. Thanks to all residents that have participated in the effort and to everyone that supported us through this petition.

The Municipality of Chelsea reduced the normal lake level by almost one meter in November 2011 as a safety measure. This reduction has had a significant impact on the lake ecosystem. Recent discussion with the Centre d’expertise hydrique du Québec (CEHQ), the organization responsible for dam safety in Quebec, indicated that based on a recent engineering study, the risks are small and that, as such, water levels could now be safely increased but the municipality remains inflexible.
At the same time, residents learned of a proposed 80-unit housing subdivision in an area within 500 meters of the lake, despite the area being identified by the National Capital Commission as an important wildlife corridor for Gatineau Park, that it is the host of 32 species at risk and an important source of biodiversity for Beamish Lake.

***********
