Why this is important
Shapsuga belongs to a large tourism-oriented area located in the West Caucasus (Russia, Krasnodar Krai—also known as Kuban, Abinsk District) in the same region as Sochi, 60 km from the Black Sea (the City of Novorossiysk) and the Sea of Azov.

This area is a great tourist destination with unique xerophytic landscapes and hundreds of dolmens (ancient megalithic structures from the Bronze Age).

This year, the Federal Agency of Mineral Resources offered for sale three land plots for marl mining for the production of cement in this area. This was done illegally (state crimes are wide spread in Russia, fueled by large scale corruption and lobbyism), because the proper procedures were circumvented—e.g. the public hearings on the project, as mandated by the law, had not been conducted. When they were eventually conducted, under pressure from environmental activists such as Andrey Rudomakha, in the village of Shapsuga, they showed a unilateral 'No' to the construction project from the local population.

If these plans are implemented, the mountains in this region will become covered by ulcers of cement pits, and the region, which is now famous for its unique nature and numerous cultural and historical monuments, will turn into an industrial moonscape. We must do our best to prevent the implementation of these predatory plans that will unavoidably result in destruction of landscapes, pollution of natural habitats, and thus in a lower recreational capacity of this region—one of the most popular vacation spots among the people of Krasnodar Krai and the entire Russia.

Now that we know what happened to the Belaya River in same region and as we witness the environmental disaster in Sochi unleashed by the construction for the upcoming Olympics (without exaggeration the most corrupted and expensive Games in history), we can understand that it will spell the doom for Shapsuga as well.

We need help to save these unique natural landscapes.
