Special Administrator - Lami Town Council: Objection to the altered zoning from Residential to Heavy Industrial

Dear Friends

Waibola in Wailekutu Lami is a residential place surrounded by mangroves. The natural habitat is a source of life, income and health to the people from the area. As of last year, Pacific Building Solutions sign a deal with the government to developed the place as a Heavy Industrial Area.The hope of the people to survive and earned income from the area is at risk as the company is moving to reclaim land and destroy the natural Habitat.

Below is a list of objection to justify our request for local authorities to reconsider this development.

• The area is a food source for many in the community.
• Industrial belongs in an industrial Zone.
• There will be significant Environmental damage.
• There will be extraordinary strain on the Marine environment.
• The Applicant has shown blatant disregard for proper process and this community. There is no indication that they will abide by the Law unless forced to do so.
• Putting Heavy Industry on Draunibota Bay will be laughable and frowned upon in the eyes of the global community and climate change.
• If rezoned there will always be conflict that could have been avoided when using industrial zones.
• Lami could not be called the ‘Garden Town’ when we destroy our greatest garden of all.
