The Australian Senate: Keep the ban on lion trophies and body parts.
Donalea P.
started this petition to
The Australian Senate
Federal Environment Minister,
Greg Hunt's
courageous and visionary stand on
banning the importation of lion trophies and body parts
into Australia is opposed by
Senator David Leyonhjelm
who is tabling a disallowance motion in the
Australian Federal Parliament on 15 June, 2015.
A blanket ban on lion imports was announced by Minister Hunt on 13 March, this year - a direct response to the cruel and barbaric industry of canned hunting.
In South Africa it is estimated that around 8000 lions are in farmed captivity destined for a canned hunt . There are fewer than 3000 lions in the wild and many of these are also under threat as they are targeted to rejuvenate the genetics of the farmed lions.
Australia has set a precedent by treating Africa's diminishing lions as CITES Appendix 1, with other countries expected to follow our lead. We ask you to join us by signing and sharing this petition which will be presented to the Australian Senate before the June 15, 2015.
Let the public ROAR it’s disgust that Senator Leyonhjelm would feel that Australia should reverse this decision. Senator Leyonhjelm and the Shooters & Fishers Party want softer gun laws and are pushing for Australia’s national parks to be open to recreational hunters.
This is a pivotal moment for the public to show that trophy and the insidious practise of canned hunting has no place in our civilised society, and that hanging dead animal parts on the wall when lions are racing to extinction is simply unacceptable .
We’ve seen several airlines take a stand by refusing to transport trophy hunting cargo. This all began with Minister Hunt’s ban.
These animals belong to the planet and losing them is not a legacy we should leave our children.
Australia, keep the ban on lions trophies and body parts in place.
Supported by For the Love of Wildlife, Animal Justice Party and Coalition Against Duck Shooting.
