Several weeks more (minimum) is far too long for residents of Morwell to suffer the effects of this fire!
According to the CFA website, "while progress has been made to extinguish (the Hazelwood mine fire), there is still at least several weeks of work ahead". (http://news.cfa.vic.gov.au/news/mines-ctty-info-newsletter-16-2.html). Meanwhile, State Control Centre meteorologist Kevin Parkyn suggested that "blazes like the Hazelwood mine fire could burn even in winter". (http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/fire-will-burn-through-victorias-antarctic-cold-snap-20140215-32skq.html#ixzz2tSwxmIr7)
In the meantime residents in Morwell are living in houses that are becoming increasingly less functional due to the smoke and the accumulation of ash particles, and have no choice but to helplessly endure the decreased air quality caused by excessive smoke, ash in the air, and elevated carbon monoxide levels, which pose significant health risks, according to Victoria's Chief Health Officer, Dr Rosemary Lester (http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/fire-will-burn-through-victorias-antarctic-cold-snap-20140215-32skq.html#ixzz2tSt5rhUx).
We are grateful for the work CFA and MFB are doing in fighting the fire, however having houses filling up with ash, and breathing in smoke and ash for "several weeks" is not sustainable for the residents of Morwell.
We are calling for the State Government to put more resources toward extinguishing the fire immediately!
