Viktor Orban, Hungarian prime minister: Build a memorial for unsung wartime acts of bravery by Hungarian people

A magyar kormány emlékművet tervez állítani Magyarország német megszállásának 70. évfordulójára. Ez nagyon sötét korszaka volt Magyarországnak, és sokak számára ez az emlékmű szomorú és megosztó, negatív szimbólum lenne.

Ehelyett olyan emlékművet állíthatna a kormány, mely az átlagembereknek a háború és a kommunizmus időszakában tanúsított bátorságát ünnepelné. Azokét, akik életük kockáztatásával mentették barátaikat, szomszédjaikat a náci és kommunista üldöztetés elől.

Egy ilyen emlékmű az egység szimbóluma lehetne az országban; megmutatná, hogy az emberséges cselekedetek származási, vallási vagy kulturális különbségek fölé emelkedhetnek; hogy, ünnepelhenjük a sötét és nehéz időszakokban tanúsított bátorságot, hatrahagyva a jelentektelen kulonbsegeinket es aggodalmainkat; megmutatná a bátorság és szeretet erejét a megosztó, sötét hatalmakkal szemben.

Egy ilyen emlékmű önbizalommal tölthetné el a nemzetet, ha azoknak a hősöknek állítana emléket, akik mindenüket kockáztatták felülemelkedve a vallási és egyéb megosztó különbségeken, mert nem tudták tétlenül nézni a gonoszságot.

The Hungarian government is planning to set up a memorial for the 70th anniversary of the occupation of Hungary by Germany in the second world war. The planned memorial dwells on a very dark hour of Hungarian history. It is a symbol of negativity which risks causing distress and division.

Instead of this the government should build a memorial to celebrate acts of bravery by common people both during the war and during the era of communism: where ordinary Hungarian men and women risked their lives to save friends and neighbours from persecution by the Nazis or by the Communists.

The monument would become a focal point for unity in the country; showing how humanity can transcend differences of race, faith or culture; celebrating incredible bravery in dark and difficult times - putting our petty differences and worries to shame; showing the power of courage and love against dark forces of division.

Such a memorial would help build national confidence by focusing on brave and heroic Hungarians who risked everything and ignored religious and other differences because they could not stand by and see evil done.
