Chelsey C.
started this petition to
ACC Board of Trustees
Dear neighbors,

Thanks to you we were able to deliver TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY THREE signatures (gathered in under two days!) to the ACC Board of Trustees meeting. Over a dozen residents spoke out with articulate and moving arguments, and I am so proud of our community.

However, the fight isn't over. We will continue to organize around preserving the health of our neighborhood. There are two ways you can help now:

1) SIGN our new petition here: oakhillneighbors.org
2) SHOW UP to voice your concerns: April 17th, 10am, ACC Pinnacle campus (please wear masks and practice social distancing) RSVP on Eventbrite here: https://noconcreteplant.eventbrite.com

Thanks again for all your support,
Chelsey and the Oak Hill Neighbors "No Concrete Plant" Committee

Please sign to help us stop a concrete batch plant coming to our neighborhood!

Our quiet residential neighborhood of West Oak Hill is nestled in the fork where two highways split. Central to this area is a big beautiful park with walking trails, a creek that feeds the aquifer recharge zone, and at the top of it all, a community college campus (ACC Pinnacle). In the coming years, the highways will be expanded, overpasses and exits and lanes added, in a project called the Oak Hill Parkway. This project is estimated to last for 5-7 years and will cause plenty of disruption and pollution on its own. However, residents of our neighborhood have just learned that the board of trustees at ACC has approved negotiations for contract that would allow a concrete batch plant on the premise of the campus above us all.

A concrete batch plant poses a huge risk to the health and wellbeing of the residents and the environmentally sensitive region our run-off recharges (Edwards Aquifer). Light and noise and smog pollution of trucks and equipment would be nuisance, but concrete plants create hazardous byproducts that would enter our air and water, carried on the breeze right to our homes, by the rain to our aquifer.

None of the local stakeholders were informed or included in this decision. The area is not zoned for such activity, but because the plant would be temporary, it would not be required to meet permitting standards. TxDOT has subcontracted the work to a company (Colorado River Constructors or CRC) and doesn’t assume responsibility for the decision on location.

The Pinnacle campus would let the contractor cut costs and the lease would make money for ACC. While these incentives make sense for business, they are unacceptable to our neighborhood, the ultimate costs passed on to the residents who live and breathe here.

There is an existing concrete plant in proximity to this project and alternative locations that could be utilized or expanded. We sign this petition to argue that ACC and CRC must do better. Our neighborhood’s health and environment cannot be a casualty of progress.
