AFRICAN UNION CHAIRMAN, H.E.CYRIL RAMAPHOSA
The African Union Commission is due to hold its general elections in February 2021.

The list of nominees for various positions was published on the A.U. website, last week.

The position of Chairperson had no nominee, apart from the sitting Chairperson, Faki Moussa Mahamat of Chad who is seeking a second 4-year term.

COSUA is a pan African NGO operating as a partner to the A.U to use sports to build African unity, and we know for a fact that many interested candidates have been sidelined by "the system".

A case in point is that of the current Deputy Chairperson of the A.U.Commission, His Excellency Thomas Kwesi Quartey, whose application was strangely sidelined by the Ghana Government in favor of another nominee who pulled out just 2 days after the close of nominations.

Another candidate, Her Excellency Arikana Chihombori-Quao, a former A.U. Ambassador to the U.S.A was also sidelined after filing a nomination application online at the A.U website.

COSUA believes the African Union Commission elections is going to be a democratic farce if the current Chairperson is allowed to run unopposed, hence this petition for the elections to be postponed for 6 months, to enable nominations to be re-open for the next couple of months in the interest of the peace and unity of Africa that the African Union is deemed custodians of.
