started this petition to
António Guterres the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Our son was recently killed in the Ukraine. He was a voluntary humanitarian aid worker trying to help the innocent citizens of the Donbas. We are amongst millions of grieving parents all over the world. Peaceful settlements of the issues that start wars are the only way to prevent the misery of starvation, pain and death that they cause amongst soldiers and civilians alike. The United Nations was created to try to keep the peace. At the moment nations can negotiate peaceful settlements with the help of the UN if they choose to. However, often more powerful nations can intervene and prevent settlement, for many reasons not the least of which are the love of power and money. Democracy is not the best form of government but it is probably the best we have. This means people of each nation being free to vote for the betterment of each other. Often leading to better education of citizens and then more informed choices. Negotiated settlements are impossible when the most powerful nations are allowed to just refuse to take part and go on interfering in the lives of the less powerful nations, and do not agree to the majority vote, ie the principle of democracy. The banning of the power of veto by the Security Council would enable the UN to carry out its peacemaking role more efficiently and successfully. Please sign this petition to unite ordinary people to empower the United Nations to act for peace on our behalf.
