Protect Old Growth Trees

Bowen Island Mayor and Council
Petition to Prevent Further Tree Cutting for Municipal Building Projects and to Enact a Bowen Island Wide Tree Protection Bylaw
We, the undersigned, ask the Bowen Island Municipality (BIM) NOT to cut down, but to protect and retain the remaining trees, particularly the healthy old growth Douglas Firs, Cedars, Hemlock, and Maples surrounding the already cleared sites adjacent to Crippen Park and the RCMP detachment lot.
There are many reasons for this: Spiritual and mental health ones, Ecological and environmental ones, Community integrity ones. Furthermore, climate wise, destroying existing carbon storage is no longer acceptable and should not be an option in this day and age.
Many trees, large and small, have already been sacrificed for the firehall and other projects, it's time to stop.
Please get creative, re-design the proposed buildings, or site plans, instead of sacrificing ever more green space and mature trees; society can not take old growth trees and forest ecosystems for granted any longer. We must protect, not destroy trees and all the benefits nature provides, not the opposite.
A tree protection Bylaw is long overdue. Please get that done.
