Kunst mag knagen - geef ‘Destroy my Face’ een nieuwe plek.

Skatehal Pier15 heeft besloten het kunstwerk ‘Destroy my Face’ van Erik Kessels te verwijderen. Ze doen dit onder druk van de ‘cancel culture’. Online is internationaal commotie ontstaan over het werk, dat onderdeel uitmaakt van het BredaPhoto festival. Met name in de VS zien mensen het kunstwerk als vrouwonvriendelijk en beweren zelfs dat het aanzet tot geweld tegen vrouwen. Als dat het geval zou zijn, dan was er alle reden om het kunstwerk te verwijderen en had het zelfs nooit geplaatst mogen worden. Maar daar gaat dit kunstwerk niet over. De kunstenaar stelt vragen over de zucht naar perfectie die mensen er toe aanzet om hun lichaam te veranderen. Plastische chirurgie vervreemdt ons van wie we zijn. We zijn niet ons lichaam en al helemaal niet de gefotoshopte versie ervan, we zijn veel meer dan dat.

Kunst mag knagen, het mag allerlei soorten emoties oproepen, kunst is bedoeld om je aan het denken te zetten. Het verwijderen van kunst is niet de juiste stap. Wij, kunstliefhebbers en bezoekers van BredaPhoto vragen om een dialoog over dit kunstwerk. ‘Destroy my Face’ verdient een nieuwe plek op het festival.

Art can be itchy - give "Destroy my Face" a new location.

Skate hall Pier15 has decided to remove the artwork "Destroy my Face" by Erik Kessels. They are doing so under pressure from "cancel culture". International commotion has arisen online about the work, which is part of the BredaPhoto festival. In the US in particular, people see the work of art as misogynistic and even claim that it incites violence against women. If that were the case, there would be every reason to remove the work of art, and it should never even have been placed. But that is not what this work of art is about. The artist asks questions about the desire for perfection that drives people to change their bodies. Plastic surgery alienates us from who we are. We are not our body and certainly not the photoshopped version of it, we are much more than that.

Art is allowed to gnaw, it can be itchy, it can evoke all kinds of emotions, art is meant to make you think. Removing art is not the right step. We, art lovers and visitors of BredaPhoto ask for a dialogue about this artwork. "Destroy my Face" deserves a new place at the festival.
