European Commissioner for Trade, Phil Hogan
To Phil Hogan, European Commissioner for Trade:
“We are deeply concerned that the world’s poorest textile-producing workers won’t have the resources to contain the economic catastrophe of COVID-19. All stores in Europe are closed, the factories are closing as they don’t have any business because European brands are canceling all current orders resulting in massive laying off textile workers. Who is going to rescue these workers?

More information:
In apparel, textile, and footwear- a sector where workers will fare especially poorly - there are 50 million workers, many of them women who are their families’ primary wage earners. Very few of these workers have ever been paid enough to accumulate any savings.

Our responsibility is to these million workers in lower-income countries who   are going hungry if we don’t step up to our commitment to the welfare of our workers. Millions of workers suspended or terminated with little or no compensation and others forced to go to work in unsafe factories because it is the only way to avoid destitution. We cannot afford anarchy to happen in these countries, neither can European brands afford this credibility and reputation loss.

We need to mobilize a collective response by international financial institutions, intergovernmental bodies, and/or governments of wealthier nations to maintain workers’ income during the crisis. We are asking European Commissioners to work out a global response to this crisis  and to offer a Global Relieve Fund to the world’s poorest textile workers, allowing that precious money to save lives. We ask of you:

  • Textile workers income protected for 3 months
  • Funding in early payment or loans for supply chains
  • Funding in sanitizer, soap, bleach, and food to hospitals, schools, and communities

That’s exactly what is needed right now, and it’s on us to ensure our leaders will make it happen! Let’s join this global call to contain this deadly wave – when 1 million sign, we’ll plaster our call across leading newspapers. Sign now!
