Support our action and help us keeping Erasmushogeschool (EhB) a model institution where art gets oxygen, where education can flourish and where students and teachers feel at home and safe.

Wat is er gebeurd? [English version, see below]

What happened?

On 27 October Kathleen Coessens, Director of the Conservatorium Brussels (KCB) whose support, dedication, and hard work made the national and international success of the Conservatorium, was abruptly dismissed , both as a Director and as a teacher. The decision was taken by the Executive Board (CvB) of EhB on the ground of alleged mistakes in a collaborating with a music academy. Coessens immediately appealed against this decision and, after a few weeks, the Board of Appeal strongly overruled the dismissal, finding it completely unfounded. As a consequence, Ms Coessens was allowed to resume her roles at the Conservatorium. On 2 December, however, the chairman of the CvB invalidated Director Coessens’ mandate claiming an obscure "serious neglect of her duties".

Astounded by such an abrupt and unilateral action, that we esteem violent and unjustified, we petition the following:
- The immediate and full implementation of the decision of the Board of Appeal for the reinstatement of Kathleen Coessens as Director of the Conservatorium.
- The restoration in the Conservatorium of a peaceful and relaxed climate conductive of real artistic and pedagogic growth: a climate that Ms Brusseel and the CvB disrupted to its very roots at the detriment of the Conservatorium community in general and of the students in particular.
- That Ms Brusseel and the CvB take in due respect and consideration the opinion of a large majority of the staff of the Conservatorium : no less than 135 staff members have already expressed in written their support for Director Coessens, along with an impressive amount of prominent names in the national and international artistic stage.
- That Ms Brusseel and the CvB radically modify their management policy and style , which, until now, appears to have been widely based on unilateral decisions, selecting those data that suit them, systematically disregarding third parties’ opinions or silencing any criticism with authoritarian and aggressive rhetoric. It is easy to understand how this is untenable in a prestigious international institution such as the Koninklijk Conservatorium of Brussels.
- For an in-depth review of the communication policy of Ms Brusseel and the members of her team. In fact we esteem that they systematically failed to reply to direct requests for information and explanation. What is more serious, students have been reporting intimidations on social media.
- For clarity and consistency : if, as communicated, Ms Brusseel and the CvB claim that the reason for Director Coessens’ dismissal was the cooperation with a music academy, it is not acceptable that after the delivering of the decision of the Board of Appeal dismissing the accusations, other reasons are invoked. This is not how the rule of law works. The decision of the Board of Appeal should be accepted without further evasiveness.
- A General Director who acts in the benefit of the Erasmushogeschool and its Schools of Arts , bringing together the energies and the creativity expressed as a whole, instead of a bitterly divisive force tearing the very fabric of the school.

We are looking forward to putting our talents and expertise at the service of Erasmushogeschool in applying the basic principles of its vision: human dignity, freedom, and dialogue hinged on values of integrity, trust, commitment, transparency and autonomy.

We would be happy to continue our collaboration with the Erasmushogeschool and try to creatively find together the best solutions, which means the strategies in which every opinion participates to the creation of a supportive and stimulating environment conductive of learning, growth, enthusiasm and artistic freedom.
