The untouched, beautiful beach of Kastanas, on the Greek island of Milos, has been assigned as the site for an oil storage and distribution centre. Construction of six 8-11 meter tall storage tanks, plus underwater pipes, docking facilities and auxiliary buildings, is due to start at the end of September. The beautiful coastline of the island of Milos, one of the most celebrated in the Greek islands, and the famous for its blue waters desert island of Polyegos just across, will never be the same again. An oil facility, by definition a commercial activity with a heavily negative impact on the environment, on a pristine beach in the Cyclades, apart from the destruction of the landscape and the visual scar on the area as a whole, can have devastating effects in the event of an oil spill, destroying tourism and defaming the Greek islands for decades to come.
