Subject: Petition for Permanent Ceasefire in Gaza
Your Excellency,
We, the undersigned, residents of Bermuda, call upon you, as the representative of our government, to use your voice and diplomatic channels to support international efforts for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
We appreciate the UK's support for the movement towards a ceasefire and hostage deal as outlined by US President Biden on 31 May 2024. As the negotiations between Israel and Hamas continue, with more civilians being killed each day, we urge the UK to suspend weapons sales to Israel.
The recent escalation of violence in Gaza has led to a humanitarian crisis of immense proportions. It has resulted in unimaginable suffering and loss of life for innocent civilians, including women and children. Families are being torn apart, homes destroyed, and basic infrastructure severely damaged. The loss of life on both sides is tragic and unacceptable. It is imperative that all parties involved prioritise the safety and well-being of civilians above all else.
As citizens of a nation that values peace and justice, we urge you to use your influence to advocate for an immediate cessation of hostilities by suspending arms sales and military support to Israel. Beyond preventing more death and destruction from the weapons themselves, an arms embargo would add pressure for peace and would maintain international and UK law that prevents arms sales if there is a "clear risk" that the weapons might be used to commit war crimes.
We believe that a ceasefire is the first step towards achieving a lasting peace in the region. It is essential to create an environment where dialogue and diplomacy can prevail over violence and conflict.
A ceasefire is also necessary to secure humanitarian aid efforts for the people of Gaza who are suffering due to this conflict. Every effort must be made to ensure that essential supplies, medical assistance, and support can be safely provided to those affected by the violence.
Your Excellency, as concerned citizens, we stand together in solidarity with the people of Gaza and all those affected by this conflict. We believe that peace is possible, but it requires decisive action and unwavering commitment. We trust in your leadership and urge you to take a stand for peace, humanity, and the protection of innocent lives.
