In Norway, recent developments indicate an upcoming increase in the legally permitted quota for seal hunting starting from
January 2nd, 2024
. Residents and fishermen in the Dypvag area, near Tvedestrand in Southern Norway, have observed a decline in the fish supply. While some attribute this decrease to the thriving seal population, others acknowledge the significant impact of overfishing and climate change on the local catch. Within the community, there are individuals advocating for the culling seals as a means to control their numbers, with some even proposing to turn it into a sport.
Engaging in such a thoughtless and inhumane act is not a solution. The act of killing seals won't address the existing issues. Researchers have discovered a decline in cod populations across southern Norway, attributed to many factors such as overfishing, climate change forcing them into deeper waters, and a growing sea urchin population consuming kelp forests crucial for cod egg-laying. The point is the blame cannot solely be put on seals.
In the southern area of Tvedestrand, seals coexist closely with humans. Some locals have developed close relationships with these seals due to their amiable and inquisitive nature.
This petition aims to prevent any increase in the existing quota and to let the seals that live harmoniously with humans remain undisturbed.
I know it's hard to make a difference and we often feel hopeless in situations like this but there's always hope that we can make a change for the better and it all starts by signing this petition. So let's sign this petition today to save the seals in Norway!
