Our Call to Action:We call on the Government of Eswatini, the Ministry of Natural Resources, ENTC, EEA, and all relevant stakeholders to immediately halt mining in Malolotja Nature Reserve and preserve the integrity of this protected area for future generations.

Why Malolotja Matters

Malolotja Nature Reserve is one of Eswatini’s last wilderness areas, known for its rare ecosystems, endangered species, and vital natural services like water filtration and carbon storage. A foreign company’s mining license threatens to destroy this national treasure, reversing decades of conservation efforts and putting local communities and biodiversity at risk.

The Threats at a Glance

1. Biodiversity Loss: Mining is destroying the Montane Mist-Belt Forest and Grassland Biome, endangering wildlife and critical habitats.

2. Disruption of Ecosystem Services: Essential services like clean water, carbon storage, and soil health are being damaged, with long-term consequences for surrounding communities.

3. Health and Livelihood Impacts: Air and water pollution from mining will harm human health and agricultural productivity in nearby areas.

4. Global Commitments at Stake: Approving mining here violates Eswatini’s obligations under the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity, risking international funding for sustainable development.

Sustainable Solutions Exist

Malolotja’s proximity to the Barberton-Makhonjwa UNESCO World Heritage Site and Kruger National Park creates significant opportunities for eco-tourism. Expanding eco-tourism could generate sustainable, long-term jobs without harming our environment.

Eswatini’s National Development Plan (2023–2028) prioritizes green growth, job creation, and biodiversity conservation. Mining in Malolotja contradicts all these goals.

Join the Movement

Protecting Malolotja is not just about conservation; it’s about creating sustainable futures for our people and ecosystems. Stand with us to say NO to mining and YES to long-term solutions that benefit everyone.
