Introductory Statement
We express our deep concern over the unexplained and suspicious circumstances of the fall that led to the death of Chinese actor Yu Menglong (Alan Yu), and we solemnly demand that the relevant authorities open a formal case and investigation.
We demand disclosure of the truth, accountability of those responsible, and the protection of the public’s right to know and of judicial fairness.
Background
We are deeply saddened by the fall and death of actor Yu Menglong (Alan Yu) in September 2025.
Recently, video and audio materials allegedly showing Yu Menglong being abused have circulated online, drawing intense public concern. Based on the information currently available, it remains unclear whether the incident was merely an accidental death, and the possibility of violent crime cannot be ruled out.
We express our strong concern: if the incident involved “being unlawfully deprived of liberty, being forced to consume alcohol or drugs, being beaten and ultimately losing his life,” this would not only be a tragic death of an artist but also a serious violation of human rights.
Official Handling and Issues
To date, the Chinese police have not opened a case. On 21 September 2025, they concluded the matter with the statement that there was “no criminal suspicion” and that it was “an accidental fall to death after drinking.”
Despite domestic and international attention, the police have yet to address the questions raised: “the evidentiary basis for excluding criminal suspicion, details of the investigation process (such as forensic autopsy results, surveillance footage, whether multiple individuals were present), the online materials allegedly showing Yu Menglong being abused, concerns that the family may not have been able to issue statements directly, and the fact that the media uniformly reported the official version of conclusion.”
Discussion of the incident on Chinese online platforms has been subject to large-scale deletion, and some who spoke out have even faced coercive measures. Such an extreme degree of censorship further intensifies public doubt regarding the full circumstances of the incident and the official account. Justice will not arrive on its own; it requires our collective effort. We cannot allow the truth of this incident to be covered up or ignored.

We, the undersigned, represent society’s demand for the protection of fundamental human rights, judicial fairness, and freedom of expression.
We call on all who care about justice and human dignity to join in support:
A formal case, the initiation of a fair and transparent investigation, and justice for Yu Menglong.
We urge every person concerned with human rights to join this petition so that the truth of the incident may be fully ascertained.
Call for International Support
We urge Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International to pay close attention to this case, and to press the relevant authorities, under international supervision, to establish an investigation mechanism that is transparent, independent, and credible, so that the truth of this case can be uncovered and accountability ensured.
At the same time, we hope that the international community will continue to monitor and respond to the broader issues of human rights and freedom of expression highlighted by this case.
Initiator’s Statement
The initiator solemnly call for the protection of entertainment industry figures’ right to life and personal liberty, and for the prevention of violence, sexual violence, exploitation, and abuse of power. The entertainment industry has long been plagued by unequal contracts and a culture of “hidden rules,” which gravely infringe on personal autonomy and dignity.
The Yu Menglong incident may be an extreme consequence of this structural problem. We demand the establishment of effective oversight and protection mechanisms to guarantee entertainment industry figures’ basic rights, workplace safety, and dignity.

Our Demands
We solemnly demand that:
- A formal case be registered, and that the relevant authorities initiate a comprehensive, independent, and transparent investigation.
- If the investigation confirms the existence of criminal conduct, judicial proceedings must be initiated according to law, ensuring that those involved are held legally accountable and face fair trial and sanction.
- The relevant authorities must issue a public apology and provide the victim’s family with adequate legal assistance and psychological support, in order to protect the rights of the victim and uphold social justice.
