The New Zealand government Minister of Conservation.
The Hauraki Gulf, which is the Big Blue Backyard to Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, is suffering a catastrophic decline in biodiversity and mauri (life force).

This has been scientifically-proven through successive State of the Gulf reports, from 2000 onwards.

There is a consensus among marine scientists that the best remedy for the Hauraki Gulf is a network of marine reserves, covering at least 30% of the area. At the moment, 0.03% is protected by marine reserves. It has been scientifically proven beyond any shadow of doubt that the most effective Marine Protected Areas – by far – are Type 1 Marine Reserves.

The New Zealand Department of Conservation is calling for submissions on a plan called Revitalising the Gulf.

The Revitalising the Gulf plan includes no new marine reserves.

It also completely ignores the only new marine reserve proposal for the Hauraki Gulf, that has been submitted in the last 20 years.

The NW Waiheke Hākaimangō-Matiatia Marine Reserve proposal is a scientifically-supported, community-driven initiative from the Friends of the Hauraki Gulf Group.

It has 93% support nationwide; 95% support from the residents of Waiheke island, and 70% support from people identifying as Māori.

The NW Waiheke Hākaimangō-Matiatia Marine Reserve is the only practical proposal of a form that we know will effectively work to revitalise the Hauraki Gulf.
