______________________________
The Two-Mountains line of the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) will replace RTM’s electric train for the sum of $1.2 billion. The Two-Mouuntains line will be closed for almost five years. There will be smaller cars, fewer seats and lengthy bus transfers will be imposed on all users along the line. Mascouche line travelers will be forced to disembark and re-embark.
Riders on the St-Jérôme train will face delays. The new train will monopolize the Mont Royal tunnel and erase the possibility of a high speed train between Montreal and Quebec city. Questionable financing will raise taxes.
On the other hand, it is technically possible to make major improvements to RTM’s Two-Mountains train for
the reasonable sum of $520 million using public money.
There will be no closure of the line for up to five years. Double-decker wagons will provide twice the number of seats. There will be continued access to the Mont-Royal tunnel in anticipation of eventual high-speed VIA Rail train between Montréal and Québec. There will be continued public ownership.
Therefore, we the undersigned, demand immediate cancellation of the contracts with CDPQInfra Inc. for the
Two-Mountains line. We demand that the government of Québec adopt the 2005 AMT plan for the Two-
Mountains line and that the Mont-Royal tunnel remain the property of Québec taxpayers.
