The ritual " trichane in kucheta " (the spinning dog ) is an ancient tradition celebrated in some villages of Bulgaria , once a year, on March 6. On the banks of a small river , usually superficial, two pillars are installed between them and a rope is placed . After a dog is twisted in rope and spins at high speed until fall into the water . The locals are so afraid of rabies transmission they perform this secular practice to ward off the disease . Information provided by Actualidad RT .

According to organizers, the dogs do not die or are injured during the ritual . However , the shocking spectacle witnesses claim that there are cases where dogs drowned after falling in completely disoriented , dizzy and unable to swim water.

The animals often suffer injuries to the tightening of the rope and even have their bodies internally damaged . The dog sometimes , after falling in shock , breathing the dirty water that goes straight to your lungs .

" Trichane in kucheta " was banned in 2006 , after the entry of Bulgaria into the European Union . However , in 2011 , Mayor Petko Arnaoudov Brodilovo city , where the ritual takes place , allowed the inhabitants to resume the tradition with the excuse of the difficult economic situation in the region . According to him, "party " attracts a lot of tourists .

Animal protection organizations in Bulgaria , Europe and the United States are strongly opposed to the event . So this year , the activist Carmen Martinez , who lives in London , has published an online petition to prevent the ritual from happening in 2014 . The petition was active until 01 March and received almost 30,000 signatures .
