Throwing the mermaid out with the bathwater. The saga of the Ormond Hotel.

Almost the entire Sirens episode in Ulysses by James Joyce is set in the Ormond Hotel.
Currently, the developer, Monteco Holdings wishes to demolish the entire site and erect a six storey modern hotel and public bar at the Ormond Hotel and No 12/13 Ormond Quay Upper.

Although the development of this site is very much welcomed and long overdue, much more consideration must be given to preserving the original 1900's Ormond Hotel facade of this important literary heritage site and also to preserve the wonderful Liffeyscape and riversides.
Help us to save and preserve the heritage of Dublin and its literary legacies.

What we would really wish for is that Dublin City Council would preserve the facade of the Ormond hotel as a protected heritage structure.
Signing this petition will send the message to the decision makers in Dublin City Council that we want to preserve a unique and authentic structure that carries major cultural and historical significance both at home in Ireland and throughout the world.

Dublin is a Unesco City Of Literature.

It is important to preserve the essence, the fragrance and the DNA of the locations and sites of James Joyce's masterpiece Ulysses. One only has to think of religious relics, fragments of ancient texts, fossils that connect us to great things and events. All too often we are hell bent on bulldozing and demolishing great buildings of great significance. The good is in the memory of the bone.
The physical city and its memory is all around us. It connects us to the past, to our ancestors and to great events. The events that got us here today and are relevant to the now.

To simply demolish the entire present structure of the Ormond Hotel and replace it with a modern structure with no connectivity to the uniqueness and global significance of Joyces work would be an act of disregard and recklessness. To stand idly by as the citizens of the city and let this happen without some measure of opposition or challenge would be unforgiveable.

Every aspect of Joyce and what he stood for was unique, the Ormond hotel façade is also a unique part of his literary legacy, tens of thousands of visitors or Joycean "pilgrims" visit this authentic structure every year. It needs to be saved. Please sign the petition to stop the demolition.
