Stop Genetically Modified Alfalfa Registration in Canada

Alfalfa is an important crop for family farmers and in the production of organic food. Alfalfa is a high-protein feed for dairy cows, beef cattle, lambs, poultry, and pigs. The introduction of Monsanto's GM herbicide tolerant (Roundup Ready) alfalfa will have a serious impact on conventional and organic farmers. Alfalfa is a perennial crop pollinated by bees, so GM contamination is inevitable. The organic farmer will lose his organic certification and we will lose the ability to purchase organic meat and dairy as a result. GM Alfalfa was approved in 2005 in Canada, but needs variety registration before it can be sold as seed.
