Keep Portugal green and safe from massive lithium mining before it's too late

Portugal is a bio-diverse land, with 40% forest area, several abundant water resources and a landscape that ranges from deep mountains to wide open flat lands. Now, 70% of our country has lithium mining demands and some contracts have already been ilegally signed. The time to act is very short and we need as much support as we can get.
Although lithium mining is currently widely used in bateries (phones, computers and electric cars), it's mining is highly devastating: the mines are in open sky, the depth, widht and violence of drilling are tremendous, contaminating all water sources both underground and on the surface. To extract 1kg of lithium, 100 kg of debris are created. The land becomes a sterile desert, water will be scarce and high priced, local populations will live in a wasteland unable to keep their traditional way of living: based on local, small scaled agriculture as well as local economy, based upon ecological tourism in pristine paradises. Most of the drilling proposals are accross natural reserves and important rivers threatening to completely destroy a wide number of wild life habitats, affecting hundreds of species. In Portugal mining has been done for centuries and we are still dealing with the contamination, desertification and death they have brought and keep bringing, in wide scale. We also know how China, Australia, Mexico and Chile struggle to recover and cope with the consequences of lithium mining and extraction.
It is urgent to stop what could turn Portugal into the next Brazil, with ecological disasters such as the Brumadinho eminent and with irreversible consequences for the land, communities, wild life and mostly water resources from rivers to the ocean.
What we really want is not only to prevent lithium mining, but to reforest massively with native forest species. Our land has burnt greatly these last decades, and we wish to take action! Instead of destroying the eco-system any further we want to create long term jobs by fostering forest, traditional agriculture methods, soil and water cycles regeneration as well as ecological tourism.
We know energy matters and we are open, willing and curious about how to recycle and re-use batteries in large scale and happy to invest in trully sustainable solutions rather than further mining, which anyway relies upon finite resources and only delays for a few years the meaningful question that the energy industry needs to face: how to create and store truly clean and sustainable energy?
If 70% of your country was threatned by mining, what would you do?
Please help us to have a healthy future and preserve life in Portugal for the next generations.
