Among the foremost of responsibilities of the Government of Belize (GOB) is to ensure that the: sovereignty, territorial integrity, security, safety and well-being of the nation of Belize is maintained.
The nation of Guatemala remains steadfastly obstinate in its unfounded claim to virtually half of Belize's sovereign territory. The GOB, via its "4A Policy" of: APPEASEMENT, ACQUIESCENCE, ACCOMMODATION and ADHERENCE has bowed to the bullying tactics of Guatemala involving innumerable, related matters.
Sarstoon Island which lies in the Sarstoon River that divides Belizean territory from that of Guatemala, was recognised by the 1859 Anglo-Guatemalan Treaty, which explains that which constitutes the border between the two nations. Hence the Constitution of Belize (1981), via Schedule 1, acknowledges Sarstoon Island as indisputably being Belizean territory.
The Belize Coast Guard recently commenced preliminary efforts to construct a Forward Operating Base on the island. This was met by Guatemalan military aggression in the form of their entering Belizean territorial waters and demanding the Belize Coast Guard vacate the premises.
Much to the chagrin of the people of Belize, in keeping with the GOB's asinine "4A Policy", Prime Minister Barrow acquiesced to the Guatemalan's demands and ordered the Belize Coast Guard to leave the island.
As a result, the Guatemalan government advised the GOB to cease and desist all works being undertaken on Sarstoon Island (which is clearly Belizean territory), pending the determination of a complaint lodged, by their government, to the Organisation of American States.
The Barrow administration, remaining true to form with its spineless "4A Policy", has again opted to appease the Guatemalans in their demands and has discontinued the intended construction works.
The Vision Inspired by the People (VIP) political movement recognises the outright dereliction of responsibility by the GOB, in this regard and therefore call on Belizeans and true friends of Belize, both at home and abroad, to sign this petition.
It demands that Prime Minister Dean Oliver Barrow, uphold the integrity of Belize by not allowing Guatemala to dictate that which our security forces can and cannot do, within our sovereign territory.
Simply put, if you understand and respect Belize's Constitution, as well as the rights we enjoy by way of being a full member of the United Nations, it is your duty to inform the Prime Minister of the folly of his ways, as these acts of intimidation by the Guatemalan government is part and parcel of a designed strategy through which they intend to bolster their heretofore unfounded claim to Belize.
Therefore, the VIP asks that you do the right thing by kindly signing and forwarding this petition both far and wide, to ensure that PM Barrow and his administration understand that Belize's sovereignty and territorial integrity is no joking matter. In that regard, the people of this nation shall not sit idly by and allow for the misguided judgement of a few, to place our nation's well-being in further jeopardy!
