We are living in the 21st century full of material wealth, yet, in a distant corner of the world people are still fighting to have access to water.

The indigenous Wayúu people in Tamaquito, Colombia have lived a peaceful and happy life until they were driven out of their ancestral territory by the Cerrejón Coal Company in August, 2013. They are facing the absence of drinking water and of an irrigation system for agricultural activities.

Their new village is located in a hot and dry area, far from forests and rivers. They can not live off of fishing, hunting and growing crops any more. A severe year long drought is seriously endangering their very existence.

The Cerrejón and its international stakeholders have broken their promises, specified in a contract, to provide proper access to water as part of the public services in the resettlement area. They have made no effort to build a water pipe from the river Ranchería to the resettlement area.

Mr. Jairo Fuentes, the leader of Tamaquito, a community consisting of 32 families (approximately 180 people), has even traveled to a shareholders' meeting of Glencore in Switzerland to enforce their demands. But to this date, 2.5 years after the resettlement has taken place, there is still no water supply in Tamaquito. Moreover, Mr. Fuentes is confronted with anonymous threats. Therefore, we request the CEOs of Cerrejón's stakeholders to fulfill their commitments:

• Mr. Ivan Glasenberg, Glencore plc (Switzerland)

• Mr. Andrew Mackenzie, Bhp Billiton Group (Australia)

• Mr. Mark Cutifani, Anglo American plc (UK)

We will ask the UN Human Rights Council to observe all further actions of Cerrejón in Tamaquito to assure that all commitments are fulfilled with respect to the basic rights, dignity and integrity of the Wayúu people.

Our patience is running out, as we have already tried every other possible resource. Now it is time for us to act. We greatly appreciate your support!

  • Ivan Glasenberg, Glencore plc (Schweiz)
  • Andrew Mackenzie, Bhp Billiton Group (Australien)

• Sr. Ivan Glasenberg, Glencore plc (Suiza)
• Sr. Andrew Mackenzie, Bhp Billiton Group (Australia)
• Sr. Mark Cutifani, Anglo American plc (Reino Unida)
