Government of the Maldives: Find Ahmed Rilwan #FindMoyameehaa
Ahmed Rilwan, a Maldivian journalist with Minivan News www.minivannews.com disappeared on 8 August 2014; and is believed to be abducted by an unknown group.
A professional journalist, Rilwan is also a blogger, human rights defender and a popular tweep (@moyameehaa) who has received threats in the past.
Three weeks from Rilwan's disappearance, Maldives Police Services have failed to come up with any information on Rilwan's case. The government‘s response has been inadequate and considering that Rilwan’s life is at risk, lack the seriousness and urgency demanded by the situation.
The week before Rilwan's disappearance scores of journalists received death threats following media reports of escalated gang violence, stabbings and murder in the country. Still today, death-threats to journalists, bloggers, social media activists and human rights defenders continue without any deterrence by the government.
We, the undersigned individuals, journalists, news and non-governmental organizations are seriously concerned by Rilwan's disappearance and ask the Maldivian authorities to expedite the search to find Rilwan and to guarantee a safe environment for all journalists, human rights defenders and bloggers in the Maldives.
