Mayor Len Brown: Ban Plastic Bags in Auckland

Mayor Len Brown: Ban Plastic Bags in Auckland

Why this is important

An estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year. Plastic is non-biodegradable and is made from a non-renewable resource: oil.

We know plastic bags are terrible for the environment—they choke wildlife, they take hundreds of years to break down in landfills, they are difficult to recycle and they add to our demand for oil. The impact of our consumption of plastic conveniences is taking its toll on the environment and the animals that share this beautiful planet with us......

Plastic pollution is everyone's problem and New Zealand is not immune.

If we are to ensure a healthy environment for future generations of New Zealanders, then we need to do our part to minimise the mess they are going to have to clean up.

Auckland can get on the band wagon, following the growing list of cities/states around the globe that have banned plastic bags including;

New York....San Francisco....Portland....Mexico City ....Delhi....Mumbai.....Karwar.....Tirumala.....Vasco...Rajasthan.....Buenos Aires.....Rio de Janeiro.....Hawaii.....San Diego.....Penang

And countries including;

Bangladesh.......Burma.......Rwanda.......Haiti.......Spain.....Corsica.....Italy......Macedonia......American Samoa...... Switzerland........France.......Cameroon.......Oman.......South Africa.......Taiwan........Tanzania.........Zanzibar.............................and many more.

Chaos has not ensued, people have coped and the world has gone on, just with less plastic bags.

We plan on taking this petition to the Auckland Council to propose the introduction of a bylaw that will phase out single use plastic bags from supermarkets and retailers over the coming years. If you want to see a brighter future for Aucklanders and our beautiful environment, sign this petition and be a part of a community trying to improve the environment for the benefit of all Aucklanders, now and in the future.
