One of the few places in the world where you can experience wild sea turtles without diving, Akumal, "the land of the turtle" in Mayan, on the Mexican Caribbean, is habitat for three sea turtle species - Green, Loggerhead and Hawksbill; Green and Loggerhead turtles nest on the local beaches each summer; Green turtles feed year-round on sea grass in Akumal bay; Hawksbill turtles feed along the reef. Visitors patrol the beaches at night during nesting season for the incredible experience of witnessing a nesting mother turtle or an exuberant nest of hatchlings making their way to sea. Juvenile Green turtles are easily accessible for snorkel tourism in Akumal bay, a business that has exploded in the past 5 years.
Unregulated tour companies and conflict among local actors vying for exclusive economic rights and limited environmental law enforcement are destroying the turtles’ marine habitat from over exploitation. The local tourism cooperatives are being pushed aside and even threatened as the larger companies fight to maintain control of the tours. Although the turtles generate over 3 million tourism dollars each year, the local community struggles with poverty from this unsustainable practice.
By establishing a federal Sea Turtle Refuge in Akumal , the government, local hotels, cooperatives and the community in general will be able work together to design and enforce management practices that balance protection and economy. A refuge will provide a tool with which habitat and species management can be solved, in a transparent, integrated and sustainable way.

En el Caribe Mexicano, Akumal “lugar de la tortuga” en lengua Maya es uno de los pocos lugares en el mundo donde se puede vivir la experiencia de estar con tortugas marinas en libertad sin bucear. Akumal es el hábitat de tres especies de tortuga marina – La tortuga Verde, la tortuga Caguama y la tortuga Carey. La tortuga Verde y la tortuga Caguama anidan en las playas locales cada verano; las tortugas Verdes se alimentan a lo largo del año del pasto marino en la bahía de Akumal. Por su parte, la tortuga Carey se alimenta a lo largo del arrecife de coral. Los visitantes pueden caminar por la playas de noche durante la temporada de anidación y vivir la increíble experiencia de ser testigo de como una madre tortuga anida o la fascinación de ver a las tortugas recién salidas del nido, dirigiéndose hacia el mar. Para quienes practican el snorkel en la bahía de Akumal, las tortugas Verdes juveniles son muy accesibles y permiten nadar a su lado, por lo que es una actividad turística que se ha explotado en los últimos 5 años.
Sin embargo, compañías turísticas irregulares y conflictos entre actores locales compiten por la exclusividad de los derechos económicos, aunado a la mala aplicación de las ya limitadas leyes ambientales están destruyendo el hábitat de las tortugas marinas por sobrexplotación. Las cooperativas turísticas locales están siendo desplazadas y amenazadas por las grandes compañías, y pelean por mantener el control de los tours. A pesar de que las tortugas generan más de 3 millones de dólares en turismo cada año, la comunidad local no puede desarrollarse, manteniéndose en la pobreza por esta práctica no sustentable.
Con la creación de un Refugio de Tortugas Marinas federal en Akumal, el gobierno, hoteles locales, cooperativas y la comunidad en general tendrán que trabajar juntos para diseñar y ejercer el manejo de prácticas que equilibren la protección y la economía. Un refugio proveerá una herramienta con la cual el manejo del hábitat y las especies pueda ser resuelto, de una forma transparente, integral y sostenible.
