Imagine, you've been given a new job and have to relocate but soon realize that one of your family members will have to stay behind because of being x ethnic background or y religion and so are not allowed in the province/state/country where you are moving. That would be considered an act of hate, discrimination, and injustice, yes?
Recent laws in Ontario have done just that by banning pit bulls from entering, living, or simply being in our province. According to the American Temperament Test Society, a U.S. nonprofit organization for the promotion of uniform temperament evaluation of purebred and spayed/neutered mixed-breed dogs, pit bulls are ranked number two for being the most tolerant dogs. Pit bulls tested on their ability to interact with humans, human situations, and the environment, consistently score better than the general dog population. Across the globe, pit bulls are regarded as friendly, very intelligent, loving dogs and regularly used as therapy dogs. Yet in Ontario, they are not welcome because of a few irresponsible owners who did not properly care for their pets.
As dog owners we are responsible for their behaviour, just as we would be with our own children. Any dog breed could easily become a threat if raised without proper training, love, and kindness. This ban is far from being the solution. It is an act of discrimination, hate, and ignorance.
How are we to bring peace to our communities, cities, countries if we cannot even find a just and kind solution for something as simple as a specific dog breed based on the actions of owners who have not taken proper care of their animals? Dangerous is not something that pit bulls are born with, it’s something that they are taught.
This petition was created to urge lawmakers to open their hearts and consider all the facts before labeling pit bulls as dangerous, fierce, and banned from our homes. We all must acknowledge that every being has the right to life. The Ontario ban against pit bulls is unfair and based solely on false stereotypes and incorrect perceptions, not facts and evidence. It is time to base our laws on truth, not prejudice.
The problem is the deed not the breed. Please open your heart and lift the ban.
