SAY-I-CAN: quality and equality in SA education

How can we believe Minister Angie Motshekga's claims that “there is no crisis [in South African education]”, despite the fact that 11 450 South African schools (46%) use pit-latrine toilets, 22 304 schools (90%) have no computer centers, 22 938 schools (93%) have no libraries and 23 562 schools (95%) have no science laboratories?

We cannot forget the legacy of the 176 students who died in the Soweto Uprising of 1976 to demand quality and equality in education. We cannot forget their sacrifices for a struggle that has not truly ended. Unequal spending and resource distribution during Apartheid has left an enduring affect on our education system which needs to be corrected.

Implementing the Minimum Norms and Standards for Basic School Infrastructure bill will force government to deliver necessary school infrastructure and will provide a mechanism for holding government accountable should they fail to meet those standards.

SAY-I-CAN (the Southern African Youth Inter-Councils Action Network) is an umbrella organisation that links Junior Councils from around South Africa and Zimbabwe. We are for the youth, by the youth and are made up of democratically elected Grade 11 students.We will be holding marches in Johannesburg, Durban and PE on June 16 to drive home the message of this petition.
