Right now the Portuguese Government has just given the go-ahead for the majority of the area, 359 hectares, (887 acres), to be “developed”. By developed they mean “to be concreted over” and thus lost to the wildlife that finds it vital now and also lost for the enjoyment of future generations. Any development near this important area will have a hugely detrimental impact on the wildlife that uses it. It will never come back; it’ll be gone for ever.
When will Man realize that he is not the only animal on the planet?
The Algarve does not need more hotels, golf courses or holiday accommodation – all of which stand now at 55% occupancy. What it DOES need is an appreciation of its unique habitats and the wildlife that depends upon them.
Please help us get the signatures that we need for this matter to be raised in Parliament.
We need you – you’re our only hope! As Chief Seattle said, “Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize that we cannot eat money”.

Dear Friends of Lagoa dos Salgados,
I write to you today to ask you to lend your voice once again to our fight to save Salgados.
You may remember that we started this petition in 2012 to urge the Portuguese authorities to think again regarding their permission to let the surrounding area be "developed", (three hotels, two tourist villages and yet another golf course - the Algarve already has over 40!).
The area surrounding the Lagoon is pretty well the last intact piece of countryside adjoining the coast and ANY further building nearby will be hugely detrimental to the wildlife that uses the lagoon itself and the area surrounding it. The lagoon is used by thousands of birds on migration, as well as an over-wintering and nesting location, and there are various rare species that use it that the Portuguese Government is under an obligation to preserve. The preservation of these species will not happen if the go-ahead is given for this "development".
Thanks to the success of this petition we managed to persuade the government to insist upon an Environmental Impact Assessment, (EIA), being carried out before any permission would be granted. This was a huge success - but it is only one step along the way.

The latest news is that the ICNF, (the Portuguese Environment Agency), has recently suggested that the area becomes a Nature Reserve instead of being lost to the developers. This is a HUGE step in the right direction and the Government is opening an on-line consultation page on the 9th December 2021 where anyone from whatever country can submit their comments, but we only have 30 days in which to do so.
I would ask anyone reading this to take 5 minutes out of your day to make a difference for future generations.

The page is accessed at www.participa.pt and the site’s all in Portuguese obviously. It can be a little daunting, so here’s step-by-step instructions that make it easy-peasy to make your voice heard. It looks difficult but it is really easy if you follow these steps to the letter.
  1. Go to www.participa.pt
  2. click on “Registo” in the top right hand corner.
  3. Click “Individual”
  4. Fill in your name, (where it says “Nome”), your email address, choose a password, (minimum 12 characters but no need for capital letters, numbers or special characters), confirm your password and choose “Silves” in the following box “Concelho”.
  5. Go to bottom left corner and check the box that starts ‘Concordo…’
  6. No need to fill in anything else on that page; just click “Submeter” in the bottom right corner.
  7. Close down the page - you’ll open it again in a minute, but close it for the time being.
  8. The Portal Participa site will send you an email straight away. Open it and click on the highlighted ‘Ativação de Registo’ link.
  9. This’ll open up www.participa.pt again on a login page but DON’t use it. Just close the page completely and then open it up again by typing in www.participa.pt in your browser.
  10. Now click “Login” in the top right hand corner.
  11. In the search box enter “Salgados” and hit the magnifying glass.
  12. Click on the big ICNF logo.
  13. Scroll down and click “Participar” on the left hand side below the text.
  14. Choose “Outro”
  15. In the following option choose both boxes .
  16. Choose “Outro” in the last option.
  17. Now it is ESSENTIAL that you write something otherwise the next option doesn’t open.
  18. Click just below the word “Participação” and a box’ll open up in which you can write how much you value Salgados, how it’s wonderful that Portugal is looking towards the future and has its eyes on more than short-term profit for big business, how having natural spaces is so necessary nowadays and how pleased you are that this is now being valued by Portugal’s politicians for both Portugal’s citizens and its visitors etc etc
  19. Now click on “Submeter” at the bottom of the page - NOT “Submeter anexo”.
  20. Apply for your Superhero badge.

Together we have the chance to make our voices heard and to save this very special place.
PLEASE! It only takes a minute and it really is our responsibility to give a voice to those who cannot be heard - both the wildlife that use it now and our descendants who have yet to see and appreciate the natural world we are still lucky enough to have around us.
Thank you,
Frank McClintock

levar o assunto à discussão no Parlamento.
árvore for derrubada, o último rio estiver poluído, o último peixe

Obrigado,
Frank McClintock
