====update 24/02/2015====
I've had some great critique lately, and I've got a big update for you because of it.

What I've been asked is what am I planning to ask of these landlords? and why?

Here is the list of changes I believe should take place.
  • A rent reduction, OR a public, detailed, comparative report showing why Sackville retail should be priced the way it is, with plenty of data for independent study.
  • Transparency on extra fees: I've heard this from a number of employees and store owners that the commons fees are often ambiguous and show little to no return in repairs and services to the building and many residents I speak to feel they see it as well. Breakdowns of these fees and any other additional fees to the retailers, detailing how the money is divided up and where it is going, should be given to the retailers so that they may understand what they are paying for.
I don't expect these fees to be shown to the public, I believe it is up to the retailer to stand up for themselves at that point. What this allows is for the retailers to have a level playing field in any debate over their costs.

These, I believe, are simple requests that can benefit everyone in the long run. No one is asking landlords to go into debt for their renters, but if supply outweighs demand it's only right that prices drop.

To conclude this update, I now realize that Colliers is a middle man for landlords and welcome more information on the rest of these companies that may better help me address them. I will still be sending them the petitions final letter so that they may pass it along to the landlords whom it is intended for. I am working hard every night to study up but I usually have about two to three hours of time and there is a lot of information I'm taking in.

Thanks for standing up with me against unfair treatment of small businesses! This is only the beginning!
=======================

Lower Sackville's main drag is where everyone goes to shop. Just like the towns slogan "Live.Shop.Love." Sackville. But our locally owned stores struggle, and continue to fail. Our local economy is stagnating because not only does this happen here in Sackville, It's even happening in our down town core of Halifax.

My name is Milan McKay, and as a Sackville resident, I care about Sackville first. We're often seen as poor and unprofitable and having a constant turnover of small businesses isn't helping that image.

Right now we're enjoying the latest addition to Sackville, a store we've waited two decades for, Cape and Cowl. Our comic book store, which doubles as a youth safe place and even has a literacy program on the way is clearly struggling to make ends meet.

Any business start up is tough, that's true. It takes about five years to turn a profit. So then, why don't the retail space landlords help our small businesses instead of running them into the ground? This much turnover is simply not the fault of every single store owner; realizing that and giving Sackville a chance will help us prosper and bring those earnings and a better image back to the retail space owners Like Strathallen, Crombie REIT, Nova Corp Properties and Starfish Properties.

We're not asking them to give spaces away for free, we're asking for them to offer fair prices and adequate upkeep. Give our economy a chance to grow, give us a chance to prosper.
